“Voice of the People” KABF 88.3 kicks off their pledge drive this weekend (through Aug. 16). Call them at (501) 372-6119 or pay them a visit at kabf.org and give them a few dollars because it would mean a lot. They would do the same for you, I’m willing to bet. Also mark your calendars (Sept. 6) for their 30th Anniversary Birthday Fiesta, a Neil Young tribute show at South on Main. I volunteer to play “Like A Hurricane” on a pump organ

1. BLACK PARTY – “All I Know”

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m really looking forward to the new tape, “V O I D,” from Little Rock’s BLACK PARTY. Its title is apparently a reference to the Argentinian poet Antonio Porchia: “We become aware of the void as we fill it.” This is a demo that he says didn’t make the cut, which should make you excited about the quality of what did.

2. Doctor Nod – “Walkin’ the Dog”

These guys are from Fayetteville and kind of remind me of The Modern Lovers or maybe The Troggs (especially when they’re singing about watermelons). This “Walkin’ the Dog” song is a stunner, very good and literally meaningless in the way that great pop music should be.

3. Arkansas Fe’lon – “Umma”

This came out a couple of days ago and didn’t hit me right away — just last night, when I was about to leave work and realized it was the only thing I’d been thinking about for several hours. It’s about money and momentum and the beat is a force to be reckoned with.

4. galms – “You Don’t Miss Me”

I don’t know who this person is, but they are from Little Rock and they make good, discreet computer music. This one reminds me of the time I stayed in Tampa Bay for a while with my brother and we cleaned my great-aunt’s swimming pool and found a stray cat and watched “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

5. Temper Da Don – “Where I’m From”

Think I’m impressed mostly by the production values here, but also where he’s from is Blytheville, so have some damn sympathy. It occurs to me that you could make a pretty passable mixtape made up of songs called “Where I’m From.”
