Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has rejected the immigration initiative proposed by Secure Arkansas. In a letter to Jeannie Burlsworth, chair of the group, McDaniel noted several legal ambiguities in the act. He wrote that the popular name of the initiative suggests that undocumented immigrants are receiving benefits already banned by federal law. The letter also said the extreme length (923 words) of the ballot title — the summary of the act that voters would see in the booth — makes it unlikely that the initiative would withstand scrutiny from the State Supreme Court.

Secure Arkansas can rewrite and resubmit the initiative. If it were eventually approved, the group would have to collect 61,974 signatures in support of the measure by July 7. Burlsworth was not immediately available for comment.
