Winners of the Arkansas Press Association’s annual contest were announced at the convention this weekend.
There are threeweekly and three daily newspaper categories, based on circulation, but the weekly Arkansas Times chooses to compete in the top category against the state’s daily newspapers. (Our staff of 9 compares with roughly 250 for the Democrat-Gazette.) Nonetheless, we managed to eke out a little recognition.
This year:
FIRST PLACE, coverage of education;
FIRST PLACE, website design;
FIRST PLACE, special issue (our anniversary coverage of the Little Rock school crisis);
FIRST PLACE, free-lance writing, by UALR’s Dr. Johanna Miller Lewis, an article examining the roots of the 1957 crisis;
THIRD PLACE, editorial cartoonist Tommy Durham for his “Orval” strip.
