Arkansas highway officials worry — rightly — about efforts to increase truck weight limits at the federal level in the name of fuel conservation and reduction of congestion.
Trucks already cause far more damage than they pay for. (See the constant rebuilding of the cross-country interstate routes across Arkansas versus, for example, the lack of need for similar work on non-truck routes like the Mills Freeway.) Truckers will argue that a congestion reduction will offset the damage caused by still-heavier trucks. The ghost of Henry Gray should haunt them for that.
