You read it here first, in June 2007: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has acquired the 1887 painting “The Indian and the Lily” by George deForest Brush. We predicted it; Crystal Bridges confirmed it today in a press release.

The painting was in the collection of the Pierre Hotel and was purchased for $4.8 million at a Sotheby’s auction Dec. 1, 2004. The auction catalog described the painting as one of the artist’s most renowned works. It seemed like a perfect fit for Alice Walton’s museum, which will focus on American works from the 19th and early 20th century.
