The line is open.
Odds and ends:
* Jemal Brown, 29, was shot to death shortly after noon today at a house on Tedburn Circle in Southwest Little Rock, police said. John Browning, 63, who lives in the Tedburn Circle house, told police that Brown forced his way into the house and began chasing a woman he knew who also lives there, Jessica Daffron, 25. Browning said he repeatedly tried to get Brown to leave and stop fighting with Daffron, who is six months pregnant. Finally, Browning told police, he got a pistol from beneath his pillow and shot Brown. Brown died of the wound to his left side. Police said the case was sent to a prosecutor for review on whether any charges were warranted.
* Log Cabin Democrat says UCA will spend $200,000 on heat-and-air and window replacement at the president’s home. Sounds reasonable to me. But I got to thinking: Is there any scrap of collegiate real estate in the state that gets the depth of reporting given to the boss’ house and sidewalks at UCA? I’m not complaining. But consider how little inspection is given to the tens of millions spent at UA on athletic facilities — mostly in a way kept secret from the public, with the connivance of appointed and elected officials and state employees up to the attorney general. I’d like to dispatch the Log Cabin and Debra Hale-Shelton of the Democrat-Gazette to Fayetteville for a few months.
* Jim Purcell, head of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, appears to be heading to Louisiana for a similar, better-paying job.
* The Stephens-family owned Las Vegas newspaper — whose editor is now former Arkie Mike Hengel — has cut 12 jobs, including the investigative reporting team. Economy cited. Next thing you know, times will be so tough they’ll be reducing staff at Alotian.
