Tragic night in Jacksonville, with a veteran firefighter killed after a van plowed into him as he worked an accident scene. Another firefighter and a police officer who were working the accident were also hit, and are in critical condition.

KARK Channel 4 reports that the three were on scene at an accident in which a car had hit a gas main in the 8400 block of 161 when a van driven by Bryce Allen, 47, veered off the road and hit Capt. Donald Jones, engineer Jason Bowmaster, 37, and an as-yet-unidentified Jacksonville police officer. Jones died at the scene. Allen — the son of the driver who originally hit the gas main — said his gas pedal stuck. He has been charged with 2nd degree murder, and two counts of criminal intent to commit 2nd degree murder.

Capt. Jones had been with the Jacksonville Fire Department for 31 years. Bowmaster has been with the department for 13 years. In a news release this morning, Jacksonville Fire Department Chief John Vanderhoof called the incident “a Fire Chief’s worst nightmare.”
