- MAKE LEMONADE: A Denver TV station that erroneously picked up a photoshopped gag photo of David Petraeus’ mistress and her book about him, decided to go all public about apologizing for the mistake, giving more exposure to the fake book title. Jim Romenesko reports.
The line is open. Closing out:
* FRANK BROYLES FOREVER: The University of Arkansas announced today that a statue of Frank Broyles, former Hog football coach and athletic director, will be unveiled outside Razorback Stadium before the LSU game at 10 am. Friday, Nov. 23. The statute will stand outside the Broyles Athletic Center. The public is invited to the ceremony.
* TAX INCREASES AND ENTITLEMENT CUTS: Matt Bai has a useful article on how President Obama has already agreed to entitlement cuts as part of a budget-balancing plan. Now can any Republicans get behind making rich people pay a bit more in taxes. The Obama plan, the Times wrote yesterday, would effective produce no tax increase for a family making $315,000 a year, given deductions available.
* PAINT THE BRIDGES? WHY NOT LIGHT THEM? You perhaps read in the D-G that County Judge Buddy Villines has been talking about painting the Broadway Bridge red, white and blue since it doesn’t look like an architecturally significant structure is in the cards for a replacement structure. Now comes word, confirmed by Villines, that Mayor Mark Stodola is at work on a gaudier idea, to string up the downtown bridges with lights for a nighttime light show. This would be somewhat akin to lighting effects on the Big Dam and Two Rivers pedestrian bridges, though navigation concerns would likely prohibit lights on the piers of the bridges, Villines said. Superstructures, maybe. I’ve been trying to reach Stodola. No word on what this would cost and whether there’s truth to reports that Stodola might already have a benefactor on the hook to light up at least two of the six bridges downtown. All six? It would be a spectacle Jennings Osborne could love. The Arkansas River ain’t the Bospurus, but, just back from Istanbul, I must say the spectacle of changing light displays on bridges over that waterway at night are something to see.
UPDATE FROM THE MAYOR: “Nothing to confirm at this time. Mayor’s Tourism Commission has been talking about it for some time and we are working on the idea.”
