NEW RADIOS COMING: To Driggs Fire Department.

  • NEW RADIOS COMING: To Driggs Fire Department.

A reader calls to my attention the joint announcement by budget hawk Dr. No Boozman and Sen. Mark Pryor that the Homeland Security Department had made a $468,000 grant to Driggs, Ark., so the local rural fire department could buy portable and mobile radios for the volunteer firefighters.

According to the Facebook page about the department in rural Logan County:

Founded in 1985 Driggs fire department was started by people of the community of Driggs. Driggs Fire Department consists of many volunteers from all over the community. We have 1 pumper truck, 1 first repsonder/mini pumper, a brush truck and 2 tankers.

I can’t find a definitive population listing, but several sources on the web put it around 500. A radio in every glovebox?

UPDATE: A spokesman for Sen. Mark Pryor said that the news release on the grant didn’t fully explain the scope of the grant. He said it will “enhance communications” for 17 fire departments all over Logan County, not just the Driggs FD. The money also benefit some parts of neighboring counties, he said.
