The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a temporary stay on a district court’s decision that allowed same-sex marriage in Utah.
This puts the state ban in place until an appellate court can hear the case.
scotusblog says:
The ruling can be interpreted as an indication that the Court wants to have further exploration in lower courts of the basic constitutional question of state power to limit marriage to a man and a woman.
Whatever happens, some instant inequality has been created in Utah. Many marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples. May legally married people be denied benefits granted other married couples in Utah. May some same-sex people in Utah be legally married while others may not?
The march toward marriage equality is far from over, as Talking Points Memo notes.
