Perhaps because I’ve lived through the diminishing mental capacities of parents — and perhaps acutely aware of my own advancing age — I was struck in a bittersweet way by Little Rock police department notices yesterday.

A “silver alert” was issued for a 75-year-old Little Rock man. He suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s, his wife reported. She’d put him to bed about 10 p.m. Friday, but found him gone Saturday morning. He called about 2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon to report that he was in Fort Smith and planning a motorcycle ride to Sturgis (California, the police report said, but  I’m guessing he meant   the motorcycle mecca of Sturgis, S.D.) He was riding a Harley (pictured). The big rally in Sturgis is in August. It’s richly chronicled on reality TV shows,

Saturday evening, the “silver alert” was cancelled. Police said the man had been located and was in good health. Too soon to have reached Sturgis — South Dakota or California. I hope he gets there eventually. One way or another.
