Every member of the Arkansas House delegation voted last night for Tea Party-driven anti-immigrant legislation that is dead on arrival in the Senate. Talking Points Memo gets to the heart of it in its first paragraph:
In a vote likely to exacerbate their party’s demographic problems, House Republicans passed legislation on Friday night to effectively require the deportation of everyone in the U.S. illegally, including young people brought as children who attended college or joined the military.
How cynical is it to serve up red meat like this knowing 1) that it’s only symbolic and 2) if it were possible it would blast the U.S. economy even as it blew up the lives of millions of families?
“Where are our hearts?” said Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights hero, in a fiery floor speech. “Where are our souls?”
Alas: The Arkansas Republicans who threw in with this mean initiative do so knowing they likely face little political blowback back home.
