Ouida Newton, who’s taught math for 34 years, currently at Poyen High School, is the 2015 Arkansas teacher of the year.
A summa cum laude Henderson State graduate, she also has a master’s in library science from UALR (4.0 GPA). In addition to teaching math in grades 7-12, she teaches math and introduction to computers at College of the Ouachitas in Malvern. She’s taught previously at Searcy and the Pulaski County School District.
The award adds $14,000 to the $1,000 Newton had won as a regional nominee. She can also take a year of paid administrative leave for professional development.
