The New York Times’ continuing look at attorney general offices focuses today on plaintiff attorneys’ hookup with Democratic attorney generals on class action cases. The lawyers get big fees. The politicians get big campaign contributions.

I’m surprised that Attorney General Dustin McDaniel didn’t make a cameo appearance in the story. He partnered with several major lawsuits, though the biggest — a pharmaceutical claim for overbilling Medicaid — got overturned by the Arkansas Supreme Court. McDaniel carved out money from some of the settlements for his own personal office slush fund, which he doled out to favored beneficiaries much as the governor once doled out state surplus for building projects.

The Nix, Patterson Roach Law Firm in Texarkana did get a shoutout as a major campaign contributor to attorney general races — $300,000 since 2004.
