CROWD GATHERS: At shooting scene. Twitter/Channel 4 News

A police officer in Berkeley, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis near Ferguson, shot and killed a teen who reportedly pointed a gun at him at a gas station  late Tuesday.

Reports say a crowd gathered afterward.. From CNN:

The officer with the City of Berkeley Police Department encountered two men during a routine check at a Mobil gas station, Schellman said. He got out of his squad car and approached them.

One of the men pointed a gun at the officer, who fired multiple shots at him, fatally wounding him. The second man fled.

The 18-year-old black victim’s mother said she learned of the shooting from his girlfriend, whom he’d gone to see. The mother said her son had been expelled from school but was trying to get his life together.

Some scuffles broke out among the crowd that gathered.

Surveillance video from the store is expected to be released at 7 a.m.

A measure of where this could head was instant dispute of my distribution on Twitter of a headline saying the teen was “armed.” Several disputed this, which is the account of police, and video shows officers around a gun reportedly carried by the dead man. Much more to come.

UPDATE: Early reporting says video released by police shows man with gun.
