The Arkansas Traveler, the student newspaper of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, reports that UA has moved to ban the small, two-wheeled scooters known as “hoverboards” from all university facilities. The decision went into effect on Dec. 18.

The electric scooters require a standing operator to make small adjustments of balance to move forward and backward. Lean forward, and they move forward. Lean back and they stop or reverse. One of the hot toys this Christmas, the tricky devices have been responsible for a slew of injuries, including broken bones, head injuries and cuts requiring stitches.
