National polls indicate a Donald Trump Republican presidential candidacy will damage down-ballot Republican candidates, particularly vital U.S. Senate races.

The Arkansas Democratic Party hopes so. It’s highlighting Sen. John Boozman’s promise to support Trump if he is the party nominee. Does that help Democratic candidate Conner Eldridge in Darkansas? Hope springs eternal.

Today, Vincent Insalaco, chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas, released the following statement on Senator John Boozman’s vow to support Donald Trump:
“Senator John Boozman’s statement that he will ‘support Donald Trump in the November election if the billionaire and reality television star is the Republican presidential nominee’ clearly shows voters how out of step he is with Arkansans. Donald Trump’s candidacy is rooted in divisiveness and negativity.”

“Seventy percent of women hold an unfavorable opinion of him giving Donald Trump’s campaign the largest gender-gap of any major candidate. While he talks about building a wall and deporting an estimated 15 million people, I am reminded about a quarter-million of Arkansas residents who are Hispanic. Trump refuses to rule out firing nuclear weapons at Europe and incites violence among his supporters.”

“Arkansans deserve a U.S. Senator who will work to bring Democrats and Republicans together to get things done in Congress. That is why Arkansans should send Conner Eldridge to represent them in the Senate.”

Speaking of polls and Boozman: Polls show a heavy majority of Americans believe the U.S. Senate should vote on President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme court. Boozman to date has been a solid no on that idea. But ….. he has agreed to meet with Garland Tuesday. That’s farther than, say, Mitch McConnell will go.
