In today’s gun news:
* COURT REFUSES GREEN LIGHT FOR MACHINE GUNS: The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a conservative bench, says a Texas man does not have a 2nd Amendment right to own a machine gun. This is well-settled law that the 5th Circuit declined to alter.
“Today … ordinary military weaponry is far more advanced than the weapons typically found at home and used for (self)-defense,” the court said, adding that machine guns are “dangerous and unusual,” and nothing like what militias might have used at the founding of the republic.
The lawsuit pressed for much more than possession of an M-16. It also said military weapons are necessary for average citizens to own to suppress rebellion. Such weapons today are not that “dangerous and unusual,” the plaintiffs said.
* REPUBLICANS LOCKED AND LOADED: Too bad the Texas man hadn’t changed gun law. Then maybe all the Republicans arming up to attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland could have brought some real show-stoppers to the meeting. From Mother Jones:
As the Republican convention in Cleveland approaches, several delegates from Pennsylvania who support Donald Trump say they are planning on bringing their guns with them to the GOP gathering. Why? They say they are worried about possible violent protest and even an attack from ISIS.
James Klein, a pro-Trump delegate from the Harrisburg area, notes that guns won’t be needed inside the convention hall and that delegates won’t be allowed to bring in weapons. “But,” he adds, “there’s the hotels. There’s going to be dinners.”
