The latest from the New York Times
on the mutual aid society that is Donald Trump and family and friends and Russia and related parties.

A “trusted intermediary” told Donald Trump Jr. that Russian sources had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The documents “would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father,” read the email, written by a trusted intermediary, who added, “This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”

If the future president’s elder son was surprised or disturbed by the provenance of the promised material — or the notion that it was part of a continuing effort by the Russian government to aid his father’s campaign — he gave no indication.

He replied within minutes: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Knowing the NY Times had the goods, Donald Trump Jr. released his e-mail himself.

So can we please stop with the dedicated Trump base’s yammering about “no proof” of contacts between the Trump camp and Russians.

Was it “collusion”? Was it a “crime”? Was it “treason”?

Doesn’t much matter to me. This does: The Trump people were in bed with Russians, in part because of business relationships. There was a time when that would have been bad for a politician. Now, I’m not so sure.

PS: Common Cause calls the e-mails a “smoking gun” and evidence of illegally solicited contribution of foreign help in the form of opposition research.

And then there are idiots like Mike Huckabee, who think it’s all a big yuk.
