The State Police said a Batesville man was killed by police fire last night after he reportedly shot and wounded a local police officer.
The news release:
Around 7:40 PM yesterday evening (November 3rd), a Batesville Police Department officer responded to a residence located on Neeley Street in Batesville.
The officer made contact with Marvin Stair, 44, who immediately fired a gun at the officer striking him multiple times. The officer returned fire, retreated to cover, and called for assistance.
According to initial statements, as additional officers were arriving at the residence, Marvin Stair appeared from the front door of the home and pointed a rifle at them, leading police to fire on the suspect.
Stair was pronounced dead at the scene. His body will be turned-over to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for examination.
No information has been released on the identity or condition of the officer who was shot. An early report by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette quoted a state trooper as saying the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.
