HOLD YOUR APPLAUSE: For Susan Collins.

I have six words to respond to blaring headlines that Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said she wouldn’t support a Trump Supreme Court nominee who’d demonstrated “hostility” to Roe . Wade.

Those words: Samuel Alito, John Roberts, Neil Gorsuch. Collins voted to confirm all of them. Clarence Thomas, an avowed Roe opponent, was already on board when Collins entered the Senate.

All of three Collins confirmed have been consistent votes in support of increasing abortion restrictions that are on the verge in some states of — in fact, if not in law — eliminating legal abortions.

The nominee will express respect for honoring precedent, no doubt and dodge questions about specific cases like Roe. But the nominee will be chosen to fit in a conservative bloc ready to overturn precedent when ideology suits. See the anti-union decision just handed down.

I’m holding applause for Collins. Though it’s better than nothing.
