A duck excursion boat capsized and sank this evening on Table Rock Lake near Branson, Mo. 31 were aboard and many deaths are feared.

News reports indicate a storm may have contributed to the accident. The Stone County sheriff in Missouri has confirmed at least eight deaths.

Periodic deadly accidents on the amphibious craft have led to calls for safety regulations and even bans.  One of the deadliest occurred on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs in 1999 when 13 died.

UPDATE: Friday morning the sheriff put the death toll at 13, with four missing and two people in critical condition. A sudden storm swamped the boat, authorities are saying.

UPDATE II: The four missing bodies have been recovered and the death toll is at 17.
