SPORTS WAGERING: It can be big business, as shown in Vegas betting parlor.

The Associated Press reports on plans by Caesars Entertainment to add sports wagering at casinos in New Jersey and Mississippi (in Biloxi and Tunica, just across the river from Helena.)

This is part of the fallout from the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upended a ban on sports wagering in all but Nevada.

The expansion of sports wagering to neighboring states (can Louisiana be far behind?) will add to the push for sports wagering in Arkansas. It’s currently prohibited by statute. The existing casinos at Southland and Oaklawn Park would certainly like to add sports wagering to existing o0ff-track betting, including by mobile devices, on horse and dog races.

A proposed constitutional amendment to add two casinos in Arkansas would give them sports wagering authority No one has yet specifically proposed a law for the 2019 legislature on sports wagering. It would be tricky. The casinos would like to retain their duopoly on legal gambling. A lot of others are hungry to get into the betting business. The familiar religious opposition is already at work.
