The State Police is investigating the shooting death of an Interstate 40 driver who reportedly pulled a knife on a Pope County deputy after a traffic stop about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in Conway County. The driver hasn’t been identified.

From the State Police release:


A Pope County Deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by the unknown individual along Interstate 40. The Individual failed to stop, and continued traveling east on Interstate 40 into Conway County.

According to initial statements, upon coming to a stop the individual stepped out of the vehicle armed with a knife. A Pope County Deputy fired on the individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for positive identification and examination.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
