State Rep. Bruce Cozart of Hot Springs introduced today the expected legislation to raise minimum teacher pay.
It lifts the pay for a beginning teacher with a bachelor’s degree by $1,000, from $31,800 to $32,800 in the 2019-20 school year. The same pay raise is given at every step for a year’s experience up to 15 years, where top pay for a bachelor’s degree would now be a minimum $39,500. The minimum’s range for a person with a master’s degree would be from $37,450 to $44,950. Correction: I misread the legislation initially and put the first-year increase too high, at $1,400.
The legislation also lays out increases in the minimum in each of the succeeding three years — an additional $1,000, $1,100 and $ 1,100. As a practical matter, those can be altered if financial circumstances dictate in future years.
