On a four-four tie vote, the Fayetteville City Council last night failed to approve an ordinance that would have limited building front-oriented two-car garages on narrow lots.

The measure was proposed to improve, among others, the walkability of neighborhoods and have higher standards on densely developed neighborhoods. But, as we noted earlier, the powerful real estate lobby rose up to fight the measure and threatened to use a new state law by Sen. Bart Hester placing limits on local housing ordinances to fight it.

The ordinance had been amended to make it less objectionable, but not enough apparently. Mayor Lioneld Jordan declined to vote to break the tie.
