One of two Conway School Board races has taken an ugly turn.

In a post Sunday, a woman named Cassie Hill took to Facebook to encourage people to vote in the May 9 elections. She proceeded to make one of the cruelest political posts I’ve ever seen in a school board race.

Hill wrote in part, “We have a mentally ill person trying to get say over our kids! This is unacceptable. These abominations need to be called out!! Please educate yourselves on the candidates and then do the right thing and vote for encumbant Jennifer Cunningham.” (That’s the most creative spelling of “incumbent” I’ve seen lately.)

Making matters far worse, Cunningham then commented, “Thanks so much for posting this Cassie Hill!!!” Cunningham deleted her comment this afternoon.

Hill did not name Cunningham’s opponent, but that would be Sheila Franklin. Another candidate originally in the race, Jess Disney, has withdrawn, but her name may still appear on the ballot.

I don’t know what sparked this post. I do know that Cunningham, Disney and Hill are white. Franklin is Black and today confirmed my suspicion — she is NOT mentally ill.  I also know that Disney is an openly transgender woman — a fact that opens her to prejudice.

Franklin said she had not seen the Facebook post but wrote, “My only response would be that I’m not mentally ill. Also that mental illness should never be used against anyone. Shame on all of them for posting this. I’m not into ugly campaign races. I don’t have anything negative to say about anyone. I’m focusing on my race and only my race.”

I have emailed and messaged Cunningham, who barely speaks at board meetings, but haven’t heard back. Disney said she doesn’t have any comment at this time. I will say Disney seems kind, intelligent and not mentally ill.

Franklin said she has “never felt the need to pull someone else down to make myself look better. It’s not just hateful” but also “especially sad that they don’t know there’s something bad wrong with this.”

Just in case any of this mess vanishes from Facebook, here are some souvenirs:
