A group pushing back against Arkansas’s near-total abortion ban is inviting supporters to a rally at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the state Capitol.

Put on by Arkansans for Limited Government, Sunday’s event is part of a push to collect the more than 90,000 signatures needed to put the Arkansas Abortion Amendment before voters.

Current Arkansas law bans all abortions except to save the life of the mother. The Arkansas Abortion Amendment would allow abortion in cases of rape, incest, fatal fetal anomaly, to save the health of the mother and for up to 18 weeks after conception.

Event speakers include two board-certified OBGYNs, Dr. Chad Taylor and Dr. Janet Cathey, who will talk about the reproductive obstacles women and girls face today in our state.

The Arkansas Abortion Amendment expands reproductive health access far beyond current state law, but falls short of the more permissive abortion access laws proposed in other states. As such, heavy-hitting national funders so far haven’t sent any money to Arkansas.

Civil rights activist and pastor Rev. Ryan Davis will galvanize reproductive rights advocates for the heavy lift of collecting signatures and convincing voters.

Supporters of this grassroots effort will have an opportunity to sign the petition at the event on Sunday.
