Fire alarm

Talk about fire protection has taken an urgent tone lately at City Hall. Suddenly the Little Rock City Board of Directors is discussing publicly the need for more fire coverage - and whether it's a reason not to approve new annexation or recent applications for new development in West Little Rock.

Well-written songs mean the difference

We said in this space before the Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase began that good songs don't lie. We meant that no matter the genre and no matter what the judges' particular music preferences were, they'd be able to determine the acts with the best songs.

Bush the genius

Here's an intriguing question. Did George W. Bush blunder into his wonderful strategy of exploiting American workers' angst over their taxes to gain ever greater tax cuts for the rich and friendly corporations or is there a cruel but methodical genius at work?

The new rules

Professional self-loathing

Have you heard the big political news of the week? It's that John Kerry did not have sexual relations with that woman.

Doctor singled out by Bush faces malpractice suit

In a speech at Little Rock Jan. 26, President Bush pointed out Dr. Sara McBee of Fayetteville and said that she'd stopped delivering babies because of rising insurance costs that were "a direct result of too many junk lawsuits."

Clark's departure

When Wesley Clark pulled out of the presidential race last week, a friend said, "Well, that means Little Rock won't be the only city with two presidential libraries." I had to admit that I had never thought of that.
