St. Joseph’s recognizes National Heart Month with heart healthy recipe contest
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – February is National Heart Month, and in an effort to celebrate the spirit of heart healthy cooking in the community, the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center is holding a heart healthy recipe contest.
Prepared heart healthy dishes, along with the recipe card and the name and phone number of the contestant, may be turned in at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29. Contestants are asked to enter low-sodium, low-fat dishes in a disposable container. Prizes will be awarded in four different divisions – appetizer, side dish, entrée and dessert – with a $100 gift card going to the overall winner.
The heart healthy food dishes will be judged on taste, appearance and nutritional value. The winning dishes will be determined and their chefs notified during the week of Jan. 29. Then, those winning dishes will be featured during a live cooking demonstration with both the winning and guest chefs on Feb. 12. Details of the live cooking demonstration at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center will be released later.
Local judges for the heart healthy recipe contest will include Tom Hare (Triumph Fabrications Human Resources Director), Melinda Gassaway (Hot Springs Sentinel-Record Executive Editor), Monda Barlow (Community Counseling Services Human Resources Director), Dr. Greg St. John (Central Arkansas Cardiovascular Institute cardiologist) and Jed Liuzza (St. Joseph’s Human Resources Executive Director).
