IT WAS A GOOD WEEK FOR …
The RACE FOR THE CURE. More than 40,000 ran and walked in Little Rock to raise money to fight breast cancer on a gloriously crisp Saturday.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.
• ATTORNEY GENERAL MIKE BEEBE. He finally got around to defending himself as a consumer advocate on utility rate cases. His defense was sound, though it may be too late the remove the Entergy-toady label that Republicans have tried to slap on him.
• The DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE. The newspaper reported what we’ve been saying for weeks. Namely, the college and highway bond election that The Huckster is promoting as a freebie will add tens of millions of taxpayer debt for years to come. Arkansas Business also reports that the highway plan — absolutely vital according to The Huckster — is currently nonexistent. Give us some money and trust us to spend it right, sayeth Bro. Huckster.
ASA HUTCHINSON. The Republican gubernatorial candidate for once said something we agree with — federal law shouldn’t bar all people convicted of drug possession from receiving college financial aid.
IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR …
LITTLE ROCK CITY GOVERNMENT. A secret study group unveiled a wired sales tax increase plan — larded with corporate welfare — to be financed by poor folks’ grocery taxes. Shame on you, Director Michael Keck, for presiding over this charade.
DILLARD’S. The Little Rock department store chain was accused — again — of racial profiling. The suit said the company wrongly targeted blacks for shoplifting in three states.
BOOZE IN THE BLEACHERS. The state ABC administrator turned down a request from UALR to sell alcohol at its new campus arena. The school will appeal to the ABC board.
The HOGS. When you’re pumped about a “moral victory” — Georgia won 23-20 — you know your season is a stinker.
