• ATTORNEY GENERAL MIKE BEEBE. He finally got around to defending himself as a consumer advocate on utility rate cases. His defense was sound, though it may be too late the remove the Entergy-toady label that Republicans have tried to slap on him.

• The DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE. The newspaper reported what we’ve been saying for weeks. Namely, the college and highway bond election that The Huckster is promoting as a freebie will add tens of millions of taxpayer debt for years to come. Arkansas Business also reports that the highway plan — absolutely vital according to The Huckster — is currently nonexistent. Give us some money and trust us to spend it right, sayeth Bro. Huckster.

ASA HUTCHINSON. The Republican gubernatorial candidate for once said something we agree with — federal law shouldn’t bar all people convicted of drug possession from receiving college financial aid.

IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR …

LITTLE ROCK CITY GOVERNMENT. A secret study group unveiled a wired sales tax increase plan — larded with corporate welfare — to be financed by poor folks’ grocery taxes. Shame on you, Director Michael Keck, for presiding over this charade.

DILLARD’S. The Little Rock department store chain was accused — again — of racial profiling. The suit said the company wrongly targeted blacks for shoplifting in three states.

BOOZE IN THE BLEACHERS. The state ABC administrator turned down a request from UALR to sell alcohol at its new campus arena. The school will appeal to the ABC board.

The HOGS. When you’re pumped about a “moral victory” — Georgia won 23-20 — you know your season is a stinker.
