Now I know what you’re thinking: Canned food is for after George W. accidentally plugs his X-Box controller into the Nuclear Football and sparks a fiery holocaust. But now that the Eat Arkansas blog is up and running, I’ve got to dish (har-har-har) about a lil’ ol canning company that really knows which way Southern gullets are bent: Glory Foods.
Though Glory is based out of Columbus, Ohio, the brains behind the operation are all Mississippi, including founder Bill Williams — who famously said that while it might be impossible to put Sunday-good food in a can, he could damn sure can up some Tuesday-good food. So far, this writer hasn’t found anything they make that doesn’t hit that mark — though we haven’t come anywhere near eating our way through their entire lineup, which includes candied yams, butter beans, fried apples, 12 varieties (!) of canned greens and over 50 other Southern favorites. Recently, they’ve branched out into hot sauces, frozen entrees and low-sodium versions of their most popular items.
While Glory isn’t quite going-to-Grandma’s tasty, it’s pretty dang fine for something that comes out of a can. Given that nobody ever complained about sweating all day over a hot can opener, they’re plenty-nuff to tide you over until you get back down to the Old Home Place.
