There’s a great new recipe for the iconic confection at, taken from their cookbook, The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook. It’s just won cookbook of the year from the James Beard Foundation, as well as a Julia Child award, and rightly so. The photos and layout are beautiful, but most importantly, the recipes make you want to get into the kitchen. Most recipes, like the red velvet cake that is punched up with orange zest and a more intense cocoa flavor, are updated and tweaked Southern classics that utilize fresh and contemporary ingredients. Many of the recipes, like the Lee brothers, also hail from Charleston and the Lowcountry. You might be familiar with their byline from the New York Times and other national publications, but there is an Arkansas connection—one of the Lee boys lived in Little Rock in the early 1990s while working on the Clinton campaign.
