OCEAN: Bodoging

I’ve given a lot of play to the Showcase we’ve got going, but I’d be remiss not to plug some local acts who’ve been contesting outside of Arkansas.

OCEAN, an alt-rock band out of Conway, has advanced to the regional finals of the Bodog International Battle of the Bands (a new version of garageband, maybe?). The five-piece won three rounds in Dallas in Jan. and Feb. and now, according to the band, is one of 37 bands left out of the original 7000+ entrants. If the band wins the regional finals in Chicago at the House of Blues on March 9, they’ll go on a world tour with Bodog Ent. to compete for a million dollar record contract. Shocking: It’ll be filmed as a reality show on FuseTV, too. You can catch the band at Maxine’s on Feb. 23 before they head to Chicago.

Coopers Orbit, who won last year’s Showcase, recently won the region’s Waka Winter Tour Battle of the Bands at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville. The win earns them a spot in the Wakarusa Festival, held annually on the outskirts of Lawrence, Kan. This year its June 5-8. The Flaming Lips headline. It’s a solid, if stone-y, line-up. Dr. Dog, Del the Funky Homosapien, the Gourds, CAKE.

NWA folk singer Shannon Wurst has been selected for the Performance Alley Showcases at the North America Folk Alliance set to be held in Memphis on Feb 20-24. She is one of 200 selected among 2,000 entrants. Catch her at Sticky Fingerz on Wed., Feb. 20, opening up for Bruce Robison.
