DEJEUNER SUR L'HERBE INTERRUPTED: "1863 After Manet and Homer," painting by James Volkert, 2003.

All you readers up Fort Smith way: James Volkert’s mixed-media work borrows from the repertoire of famed artists to inspire a new way of looking, or using, images. Work by the former associate director of the Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., will be the subject of a talk, “Interpreting the Recent Works of James Volkert,” at 6 p.m. tonight (Jan. 30), by Alana Embry of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. She’ll be speaking at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, which hosted an exhibition of Volkert’s work, “RE:history.”
