Perhaps as an attempt to rescue the tradition of “Charlie’s Angels” revivals from its recent powderpuff past, Sony and director Elizabeth Banks have tasked an ace playwright with the script for the latest film iteration of the detective story: Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize recipient David Auburn, who grew up in Arkansas.

Auburn is best known for “Proof,” the story of a woman struggling with her deceased father’s mathematical genius and mental illness, and the ways in which she may be following in his footsteps, but he also penned “The Columnist,” “Skyscraper” and “What Do You Believe About the Future?” The playwright has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Critic’s Circle Award, and the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award.
