Roger Carlisle, "Blue Trees"


The Bradbury Art Museum at Arkansas State University’s fall exhibition season that opens Aug. 30 includes “Vivid Life,” an exhibition of works by the late Roger Carlisle, a member of the university’s art faculty for 40 years. Carlisle, the recipient of several awards, is known for his colorful landscapes; “Vivid Life” covers several decades of his work.

The “2017 Faculty Biennial” will be the main attraction, with work by Nikki Arnell, Cameron Buckley, Joe Ford, Robert McCarroll, Bill Rowe, John Salvest, Kimberly Boyd Vickrey, Susan Whiteland and Melissa Wilkinson.

There will also be three other solo shows by ASU artists: “World Upside Down,” prints by Shelley Gipson; “The Catastrophe of the Present” a video essay by Claudia Salamanca; and “Wild Things” by Cara Sullivan.   Salamanca will give a gallery talk at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 amd Gipson will talk at 3 p.m. Sept. 20.

All shows run through Sept. 29 in the BAM, in the Fowler Center. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. A press release from ASU is on the jump.

JONESBORO – The first set of exhibitions in the Bradbury Art Museum’s 2017-18 season will open to the public Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. BAM is located in Fowler Center on the campus of Arkansas State University.

On display will be the “2017 Faculty Biennial,” which features artwork by members of the A-State Department of Art and Design. Included are Nikki Arnell, Cameron Buckley, Joe Ford, Robert McCarroll, Bill Rowe, John Salvest, Kimberly Boyd Vickrey, Susan Whiteland and Melissa Wilkinson.

Additionally, the galleries will feature solo shows by three other faculty members. All of these artists will provide individual presentations about their work to the public.

Shelley Gipson, associate professor of art, will exhibit new prints in her show titled “World Upside Down.” This series presents a conflict between the carefree existence of youth and the unfulfilled dreams of a dystopian world. Gipson will deliver an artist talk about her work at BAM on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m.

“The Catastrophe of the Present” by a new member of the department, Claudia Salamanca, will also be exhibited. Her video essay questions how disasters are covered in contemporary media. She will discuss this work with the public on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m.

Instructor Cara Sullivan has created a body of work which she will be exhibiting for the first time. According to the artist, “Wild Things” is “ . . . more than a nod to the lowly weed, this series of paintings is a meditation on the irreverent, persistent nature and joy of rebellion.” Sullivan will provide a public presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 3 p.m.

The final show in this set of exhibitions is titled “Vivid Life.” This posthumous celebration of talented artist and beloved professor Roger Carlisle will feature samples of his brilliantly painted work from several decades.

The exhibitions all run through Sept. 29.
