HBO has released the first trailer for the third season of “True Detective,” set in Fayetteville and elsewhere in Northwest Arkansas. It stars Mahershala Ali as Det. Wayne Hays, who’s investigating something that’s almost certainly grisly and haunting. The story follows him during three different time periods. Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Stephen Dorff co-star. “True Detective” creator

Nic Pizzolatto, who went to graduate school at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, wrote the episodes with help from “Deadwood’s” David Milch and North Little Rock’s Graham Gordy. Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room”), Daniel Sackheim (“The Americans”) and Pizzolatto direct.
