Chinese-born sculptor Longhua Xu, who has lived in Hot Springs since 1990 and is a former teacher at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, has been named this year’s Arkansas Arts Council Arkansas Living Treasure, an award that recognizes Arkansas artists who have preserved and passed on a traditional craft.
Xu was honored for his wood carvings, though he also works in marble. His marble “Mother Nature,” of a woman pouring water from a jug as deer gather at her feet, is in front of the Arlington Hotel. Xu also paints; “The Soul of Arkansas,” on exhibit at the Hot Springs Convention Center in 2018, featured 40 works by the artists illustrating the diversity of Arkansas.
An independent panel named Xu. He’ll be honored at a reception in May.
