Update: Due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the Arkansas Cinema Society has cancelled their screenings of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” and rescheduled their screening of “The Zone of Interest” to Friday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
The Arkansas Cinema Society is screening “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “The Zone of Interest” — all freshly nominated for Best Picture in anticipation of the 96th Academy Awards — at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts this weekend.
The oddly entwined buzz around the simultaneous releases of “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” in July made them nearly inescapable for a while, but “The Zone of Interest,” a German-language film set during World War II, is one of the lesser-known Oscar contenders. An unexpected twist on the horrors of Auschwitz, the A24 drama focuses on the idyllic home life of real-life Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, who lives with his wife and children just outside the concentration camp walls. Amid their attempts at domestic bliss, murmurs of unimaginable suffering loom in the background.
“The Zone of Interest” plays Saturday, which is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Showtime is 2:30 p.m., and admission is free. “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” play as a double feature on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. for $15 each. Tickets are available here.
Over the next few weeks, the Arkansas Cinema Society and Arkansas Museum of Fine Art are planning to show four more of the Best Picture nominees Oscar-nominated films. The films are still TBA, but two will be screened on Sunday, Feb. 4, and two will be screened on Sunday, Feb. 18. Keep an eye on their social media for developments.
