The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) has announced that the Arkansas Cinema Society (ACS) and Ballet Arkansas will be their "partner companies-in-residence," along with other yet to be unveiled collaborations that are currently in development.

“Papaw Land” is a tense yet taciturn coming-of-age drama about Arkansas, made in Arkansas and written and directed by Arkansan filmmaker Justin Blake Crum. When I watched the trailer, which tells of a troubled seventeen-year-old boy sent to his grandfather’s place for a summer of rural edification, the mossy foliage and harsh sun were immediately recognizable as the Ozarks. The film will screen on Thursday, Jan. 26 at Ron Robinson Theater.

On The Observer’s second day of work at the Arkansas Times, while still clueless about such necessities as the location of the office bathroom, I was tasked with covering something called Young Storytellers, which sounded innocuous enough. However, what was quickly revealed by The Observer’s boss, through a grin so tiny it almost didn’t register as mischievous, was that this would be an immersive — nay, participatory — opportunity.

Including Kristian Hill’s “God Said Give ’Em Drum Machines,” a documentary about the young Black artists redefining Detroit’s techno scene; Jack Porter Lofton and Jeffrey Dailey’s “The Vous,” about Memphis barbecue joint The Rendezvous; nine shorts and six student shorts to be screened in person, plus more offerings on a parallel virtual version of the fest.

In a partnership with the Arkansas Cinema Society, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a screening of a video series called "Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South," 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 31 at CALS Ron Robinson Theater.

Russellville native and Little Rock resident Jordan Mears has years of experience as a videographer, film editor and on lighting and stage crews, but his turn at writer and director comes with "New West," a 45-minute feature film shot in Little Rock.

"The First Step," a new documentary about TV personality, author and lawyer Van Jones' efforts to convince lawmakers to pass criminal justice reform, will screen at the Central Arkansas Library System's Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock on Friday.

Pitts' film "Salad Days" premiered to a sold-out crowd this week, and is available to stream starting today. Here's how to watch it.

The screening is followed by a Q&A session with the film's director of photography and co-producer Stephen Bailey, who is a graduate of the Clinton School of Public Service and whose career has included working closely with fellow Arkansas filmmakers Craig and Brent Renaud.

Chastain’s admiration for her character never waivers, even as we see the older Faye making unsuccessful pitches to C-level TV producers and eating TV dinners by herself with her dog.

Chastain came to Filmland to promote “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” which she produced, and which is based on a 2000 documentary of the same name.

The good news is that Filmland is back, it's awesome and it feels safe. The bad news: You've missed one of the festival's greatest film offerings, and possibly the best festival weather.
