Collection of Crittenden County sales tax to fund now-bankrupt hospital enjoined

The Department of Finance and Administration yesterday announced that a sales tax enacted by voters in Crittenden County for “repairing, improving, renovating, equipping, operating and maintaining” Crittenden Regional Hospital will not be collected. CRH closed and filed for bankruptcy last month. The Crittenden County Circuit Court last Friday issued an order enjoining collection of the one percent county-wide sales tax.

Class action certification requested in Crittenden Regional Hospital lawsuit; now more than 100 plaintiffs

The number of plaintiffs involved in a lawsuit over the alleged failure of Crittenden Regional Hospital to pay for employees’ health insurance claims is growing. Attorney Denny Sumpter asked the Circuit Court of Crittenden County on Friday to certify the lawsuit as a class action. The filing on Friday listed 96 plaintiffs; Sumpter said today they’re at around 125 (“and counting,” he said).

Crittenden Regional Hospital in West Memphis will close Sept. 7, despite voters' recent approval of a county sales tax to help keep the doors open. The hospital informed its some 400 employees this morning and also said it would accept no new patients after today.

Fire at West Memphis hospital forces evacuation

A fire broke out early this morning in room near the intensive care unit of the Crittenden Regional Hospital in West Memphis and 14 patients had to be removed from the hospital, which has now been closed, KAIT-TV reports.
