Rutledge: AG's office will investigate drug makers over opioid addiction in Arkansas

Citing what she called "staggering statistics," including Arkansas's #2 ranking for overall opioid prescriptions, and top ranking in the number of teens abusing prescription painkillers, Attorney General Leslie Rutledge announce today that her office will investigate the corporate manufacturers of opioid drugs, bringing on extra help from private firms, with an eye toward potential litigation or prosecutions.

At a press conference at the Arkansas State Capitol today, Gov. Asa Hutchinson, flanked by the state's top medical officials, announced a new program which allows licensed pharmacists across the state to sell the life-saving drug Naloxone to opioid addicts and those who might know someone struggling with opioid abuse without a prescription.

Physician, 18 others indicted for prescription drug abuse

The U.S. attorney's office announced today that Dr. Richard Johns, 49, of Little Rock and 18 others had been indicted by a federal grand jury in a conspiracy to distribute oxycodone in Lonoke, White and Pulaski counties. Johns had been charged earlier in Lonoke County on similar offenses.
