Pops on the River

By Stephanie Smittle

3 p.m. Riverfront Park. Free-$10.

Two bits of advice: If you haven’t watched the video in which your local maestro, Geoffrey Robson, stands in front of an artillery cannon at Camp Robinson and explains the use of the Civil War-era weapon as an instrument in Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture — demonstrated thereafter with a ritual pace and a “high volume” warning — you should head to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Facebook page and remedy that.
Secondly, if your head’s reeling from the sticker shock of Trump’s Yay America Stravaganza planned for Bastille Day Independence Day in our fair nation’s Capitol, take a moment and thank your lucky stars we celebrate a little more modestly around here, with some classical music and some fireworks. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette presents, for the 36th year, “Pops on the River,” a family-friendly event in the Riverfront Park. Starting at 3 p.m., there’s a marketplace with food trucks and vendors, kid’s activities and live music from Nicky Parrish, Rodney Block and the ASO, and at 9:30 p.m., the fireworks show begins. Reserved seating is available here, and a portion of proceeds benefit Rock City Rescue. Check out the full schedule (and what you’re allowed to bring in with you) here.
